Chapter thirteen

Birdsong filled the air and I cheerfully waved left and right to a neighbor mowing his lawn, another pruning his shrubs into a geometrical shape, and a young mother taking her toddler and her pekingese out for a walk.

The little dog yapped at me, and so did a spaniel when I came within 20 yards. Whatever spell Adriana cast over animals clearly hadn’t rubbed off on me. On the upside, my shoulder was blissfully pain free. It had its advantages walking around without a cumbersome brick in my purse.

I’d decided against paying the library another visit. If Fred was in cahoots with the villain of the piece or worse, the mastermind behind it all, talking ago him bout an old family scandal or giving away my interest was the last thing I intended.

Instead, I headed towards Gossip central, otherwise known as The Cocoa Cabana. Less than 50 yards away from my destination, a stranger hailed me. “Genie Darling, I presume?”

I confirmed that, yes, that was indeed me. I shook the hand of a woman my own age, with wild hair, snazzy specs in a black and white frame, and a brisk smile.

She also had a name tag clipped to her blouse. It read, Daphne Mills, Head Librarian. “Sorry I missed your visits,” she said. “Fred been looking after you okay?” I took to her in an instant, and I hoped she approved of me too.

“Everything’s great,” I said. “Fred’s been wonderful.”

“That’s good to hear. He spotted you and since I was heading this way, he asked me to give you this.”

She handed me another photocopied article and read over my shoulder. “‘Love at first sight for beauty queen and her groom’. I’d say his moolah might have helped. Don’t you think so?”

“It’s possible.” For the picture underneath the headline showed a youthful Lucille exchanging a kiss with a balding man old enough to be her father.

Was it coincidence that he should give me this article now? Or had he heard about my trip to the town hall and tried to make it clear that Lucille had been happily wed and there was nothing to see about Lucille’s premarital indiscretions?

“You should skip to the bit where one of the bridesmaids elopes with the married ring bearer,” Daphne said. “It’s an instant classic.”

“Did they run off at the wedding?”

“No,” she admitted. “But it was close enough to the main event that the connections were clear. The new bride was slightly peeved that somebody stole the attention. But then people could do with a bit of cheering up, everywhere.” She grinned at me. “Sorry, I love these little sidebars. They tell you everything you’d want to know about a place.”

“Have you any family connections to Cobblewood Cove?” I hoped my question came off as normal curiosity. It would be good to have one possible resource who had no personal interest in covering up anything from the past.

“Does dating and dumping two local guys count? Otherwise, no.” She looked around, right at the old ladies with Fred.
